Which Vitamins Help Beat Summer's Heat?

As the temperature starts to rise outside, our bodies can need extra support. Good nutrition is the first priority but with busy schedules, added activities, extra sun, travel and even sweating, your body can be deprived of vitamins that you need.

Vitamin C to the Rescue

According to research, vitamin C helps support your body to better deal with high temperatures and can prevent serious problems caused by excessive heat, such as heat stroke and heat rash. Ascorbic acid has been shown to help support sweat glands and prevent burn out in warmer temperatures. Vitamin C, a key antioxidant, also protects skin from sun damage and improves the production of collagen in the skin. In the summer, added fruit in your diet can provide higher levels of vitamin C or add extra vitamin C to your diet through a supplement.

Boost your Energy with B vitamins

B vitamins are needed year round – but there are additional reasons they’re of value in the summer months. Remember, that although you can take B vitamins independently, they are best taken as a complex to support your body. Here are a few key ones: Thiamine (B1) helps with digestion and energy production; we also need more thiamine when we consume more alcohol. Riboflavin (B2) is valuable for supporting eyes, skin and nails when we’re spending more time in the sun. Pantothenic acid (B5) is helpful during stress and like many B vitamins plays a role in energy production.

The B vitamins are in greater demand in the summer as they are required energy for activity and are easily lost through sweat.

Stay healthy while having fun this summer!
